How Is the Procedure Done?

How Is Tooth Extraction Done

Simple tooth extractions involve anesthesia to numb the area. Once numbness is confirmed, the dentist uses an instrument to move gum tissue away from the tooth to be extracted.

A drill or laser is used to gain access to the deepest areas of the tooth. Instruments are used to loosen the tooth so it can be pushed down with forceps until it pops out of its socket. The area is then checked to make sure no fragments or infected tissue are left behind. A sterile saline solution is used to wash the area, stitches are placed, and the gum tissue is replaced to its original position.

Typically, healing from a tooth extraction consists of applying an ice pack to the area and biting on gauze for 30 minutes in a recovery area. Pain medication is prescribed if needed, and a follow-up is usually completed a week after the extraction to monitor healing.

It typically takes two weeks to fully heal from a tooth extraction.

It is often recommended to avoid harder foods during the first 24 hours following a tooth extraction. Soft, cool foods such as smoothies and yogurts can be a great option during the first 24 hours after a tooth extraction.
